Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities in K-12 education are becoming more prevalent than ever before. It is currently estimated that somewhere between 6 to 10 percent of the school-aged population in the U.S. have a learning disability.  Common types of learning disabilities encountered are dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia.  Teaching students with learning disabilities is complicated by associated disorders, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity.

Early warning signs include problems with reading, mathematics, comprehension, writing, spoken language or reasoning abilities.  Any of these indicators may support a learning disabilities assessment.  If testing shows a student has a learning disability, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) will be developed by the school.  At this point teachers will use learning disability strategies and specialized classroom activities to accommodate the student.  With assistance from parents, schools and other sources, children can make great strides and get the education they deserve.
