A BRIDGE TO INDEPENDENCE

This video opens with a discussion by the U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Judith Heumann about the impact of technology on our lives. Technology and Self-Advocacy emphasizes that individuals with disabilities, parents and family members need to be their own advocates in order to change policies and educate people at the local, state, and national levels.

Judith Heumann indicates that, "Technology gives people the opportunity to move about in their environment, communicate, and be more independent, which allows people to see us as more of an equal as opposed to someone they have to take care of." Also featured are U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, Reverend Glen Gleaves, and Paul Gowins. While each explain why they believe assistive technology can be a bridge to independence, a variety of adaptive equipment and assistive devices are shown enabling people in inclusive settings.

Produced by the Utah Assistive Technology Program.
